Over the past few years, Dror Ben-Ami has been using a unique drawing technique to
work with charcoal on paper.
Ben-Ami replaces the traditional drawn line (e.g., in pencil, charcoal, ink) with
physical engraving into the paper, scoring his lines with a sharp needle.
Looking deeply into the drawing reveals a dense network of criss-crossings incised or
stamped into the surface of the paper. Sometimes Ben-Ami goes over these
engraved areas with charcoal, which penetrates into the processed paper. This
action creates dark formal structures on the paper ground. Sometimes the
background is light, while at other times it is dark due to the layers of charcoal. Then
Ben-Ami etches into the darkness to reveal illuminated forms emerging from the
surface darkness.
This technique is actually “borrowed” from the traditional etching process in which
the artist uses a sharp metal burin to mark the rigid metal plate (or linoleum
surface). Printing ink is applied to the plate, penetrating into the etched lines, and
the plate is then printed.
Dror drew his inspiration for this idea from the Old Masters, especially Rembrandt
and Goya, who made prints as a means of expression, in addition to painting in oils.
Ben-Ami’s works on paper reflect an expressive universe of forms in a wide spectrum
of textures and a rich range of monochromatic tones of blacks, whites and greys.
An additional source of inspiration for him are the “scientific” etchings of flora and
fauna which developed in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, drawn carefully
from observation by botanists and naturalists.
The language of these plates seems to be that of objective observation of the world,
but the illustrations are sharpened by the artist’s subjective, stylized interpretation.
The tension created between the observer’s objective starting point on the one hand
and the outburst of subjective aesthetics on the other, raises a question about the
essence of the human outlook on the world in which we live. In other words, it
questions the relations between the physical facts we receive visually and the
emotional load we accommodate with regard to these worlds.

על עבודותיו של דרור בן עמי תהליך היצירה מתחיל אצל בן עמי בהתבוננות חוקרת ומעמיקה על הטבע. המיבנה, הצורה והמירקם. התבוננות בפיזיות של הדברים מובילה לתובנה ריגשית של מהות היופי :העדינות , הפריכות והפגיעות המובילות בסופו של דבר להתכלות והעלמות. הנושאים בהם עוסק בן עמי הינם על-זמניים וללא גבולות : חיים ומוות, חומריות והתכלות, יופי וריק. ההוויה הציורית מנותקת מחוויית הכאן ועכשיו וצפה בין המודע לתת מודע. קיים פרדוקס בין הנראות של כתמי הפחם הכבדים והנושאים האוניברסאליים המאכלסים את העבודות לבין ארעיותו וחולשתו של הנייר הפשוט ,עליו עובד דרור . ביצירותיו של דרור בן עמי הקיום הוא גשמי וא-גשמי בעת ובעונה אחת. הציור הוא מרחב שבו סימני חיים מופיעים ונמוגים בהדרגה. בן עמי בוחר לעבוד עם נייר תעשייתי שאותו הוא חורץ, מחורר, מכסה בשכבת פחם, ומוחק. כך מתקבל קו עדין המזכיר מאוד תחריט. בן עמי ממיר את קו הרישום המסורתי )עיפרון, פחם, דיו(, בחריטה פיזית באמצעות מחט חדה, לתוך גופו של הנייר. התבוננות מעמיקה ברישום, תגלה מערך צפוף של קוקווים החרוטים- מוטבעים לתוך פני הנייר. לפעמים עובר בן עמי על חריטות אלו עם פחם החודר לתוך הנייר המחורץ ויוצר מבנים צורניים כהים על רקע בהיר )הנייר הלבן(, ולפעמים הרקע הוא כהה )שכבות של פחם( ועליהם הוא חורט וחושף צורות מוארות מתוך הכהות של פני השטח. טכניקה זו לקוחה למעשה מעולם התחריט המסורתי ,שבו האמן חורט עם עיפרון מתכת חד לתוך משטח קשיח )נחושת, צינק( . הרעיון לעבוד בטכניקה זו מקורו בהשפעה של אמני ה- Old Masters , בעיקר רמברנדט וגויה, כאמצעי ביטוי נוסף לציורי השמן. עבודות אלו מביאות לידי ביטוי עולם אקספרסיבי של צורות בקשת רחבה של טקסטורות ועושר גוונים מונוכרומטיים של שחורים, לבנים ואפורים. מקור השראה חזותי נוסף הם התחריטים ה"מדעיים" שהתפתחו באירופה במאות השמונה עשרה, תשע עשרה, בהם רשומים צמחים וחיות ,בהתבוננות מפורטת מנקודת מבטו של חוקר טבע. שפה אסתטית זו יוצרת אמירה שהיא לכאורה אובייקטיבית על העולם, אך מצטיינת בסיגנון ויופי ייחודיים המקנים לאיורים אלה אופי ופיוטיות המעידים על עולמו הפנימי רוחני של היוצר. המתח הנוצר בין נקודת המוצא של האדם המתבונן ה"אובייקטיבי " מצד אחד, לבין יצירת אסתטיקה סובייקטיבית מצד שני, מעלה את סימן השאלה לגבי מהותו של המבט האנושי על העולם בו אנו חיים ,או במילים אחרות : העובדות הפיזיות אותן אנו קולטים בעין ביחס למטענים הריגשיים אותם אנו מכילים וחווים את אותם עולמות.
