Shiree Rafaeli
Born 1956 in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel
Rafaeli started her artistic practice after many years of legal practice, first as a lawyer and then as a judge. In her art she investigates questions of human fragility and uncertainty in aspects of body, memory, impulses and power relations, striving to represent such aspects in a symbolic language of her own.
The artistic techniques chosen are deliberately such that hinder absolute control over the final outcome. Currently she concentrates on printmaking technics in which the “interfering element” is the pressure used to transfer the image from plate to paper. Lack of full control over the results of the transfer turns her work into a process of constant search, discovery and surprise, and is tightly connected to the questions investigated.
The printmaking techniques chosen are non-toxic techniques that she researched and adapted to her needs. She uses mainly Mylar and photopolymer plates, water- soluble inks and different mediums. These technics enable her to work in her studio and not only in a professional printshop, thus freeing her from technical constraints and traditions.

ילידת 1956, חיה ועובדת בתל אביב-יפו
עוסקת באמנות בשנים האחרונות, לאחר שנים רבות של עבודה בתחום המשפט כעורכת דין ולאחר מכן כשופטת. בעבודתה האמנותית חוקרת שאלות של שבירות אנושית והיעדר אפשרות שליטה בהיבטים של גוף, זכרון, דחפים ויחסי כח, תוך שהיא חותרת לסמן וליצג היבטים אלה בשפת סמלים משלה.
לצורך עבודתה מעדיפה טכניקות אמנותיות המסכלות אפשרות של שליטה מלאה בתוצאה. כיום מתמקדת בטכניקות מעולם ההדפס, בהן ״הגורם הזר המתערב״ הוא הלחיצה המכנית המעבירה את הדימוי ממצע אחד לשני. היעדר השליטה המלאה בלחיצה מקנה לתהליך העבודה אופי של חיפוש, גילוי והפתעה, וקשור מבחינה תוכנית לשאלות הנחקרות.
טכניקות ההדפס העיקריות בהן היא משתמשת הן טכניקות ירוקות בלתי רעילות, חלקן פשוטות מאד וחלקן מבוססות טכנולוגיה חדשנית, אותן חקרה והתאימה לצרכיה. כמצע להדפס היא עושה שימוש בלוחות פלסטיק מסוגים שונים ובלוחות פוטופולימריים, וכן משתמשת בדיו וחומרי עיבוד מיוחדים המסיסים במים. שיטת עבודה זו מאפשרת לה לבצע את עבודות ההדפס בסטודיו ולאו דווקא בסדנת הדפס, וכך משחררת אותה מאילוצים טכניים וממסורות.
